Obsidian Wine Company Tasting

The story of Obsidian Wine Company in Napa Valley, California is one of heritage, innovation, and adventure. The winery's history began with Nicholas Molnar, who planted Poseidon Vineyard in 1973. His sons later expanded the business by purchasing Obsidian Ridge in the Mayacamas Mountains.

He was among the first to farm this area which at the time was considered too cool to ripen wine grapes. For three decades, he grew chardonnay & pinot noir for the top sparkling wine houses in Napa Valley.

The Obsidian Ridge vineyard

  • Located in the Mayacamas Mountains, the vineyard is planted on a ridge of solid black obsidian glass

  • The extreme climate, altitude, and volcanics of the site result in wines that are prized for their aromatics, acidity, and structure

  • The first 98 cases of Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon were made in 2002

What Exactly Is a Pét-Nat? Everything you need to know about pétillant naturel wines, plus bottles we love.

Pét-nats are sparkling wines made in a manner that predates the so-called “traditional method” used in Champagne (and for most other sparkling wines). Rather than induce a second fermentation in the bottle to create the bubbles, as Champagne producers do, makers of pét-nat simply bottle the wine before the initial fermentation has ended. The result is softly fizzy, sometimes lightly sweet from residual grape sugars, usually hazy with unfiltered yeast particles, and typically sealed with a crown cap instead of a cork. We can all get along. You say potato; I say pét-nato. It’s all good. Go forth and try a few.
